    Electro-thermal modelling of multi chip power modules for high power converter application

    In a compact power electronics systems such as converters, thermal interaction between components is inevitable. Traditional RC lumped modelling method does not take that into account and this would cause inaccuracy in the predicted temperature in the components of the systems. In this work, numerical simulation have been used to obtain detailed temperature distribution in power devices and the parameters for a Foster network behavior thermal model are extracted so that the thermal interaction can be accounted for and the model can be used to predict temperatures at all critical layers of the components. An ad-hoc conventional three-phase voltage source inverter (DC to AC converter) with a rating of 7.8 KW has been studied in this work as an example of the application of the proposed framework. The key component in the converter is a 75A11200V rated IGBT module. A power electronics circuit simulator is used to predict the power losses in the IGBT module and a Finite Element Analysis software is used to obtain the transient temperature profile in the module and the behaviour thermal model parameters are extracted using curve-fit approach. The resulting combined electro-thermal model is analysed using the circuit simulator again to obtain the temperature for various loading conditions. The results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the accuracy of predicted temperatures in the IGBT modules

    Frequency Adaptive Parameter Estimation of Unbalanced and Distorted Power Grid

    Grid synchronization plays an important role in the grid integration of renewable energy sources. To achieve grid synchronization, accurate information of the grid voltage signal parameters are needed. Motivated by this important practical application, this paper proposes a state observer-based approach for the parameter estimation of unbalanced three-phase grid voltage signal. The proposed technique can extract the frequency of the distorted grid voltage signal and is able to quantify the grid unbalances. First, a dynamical model of the grid voltage signal is developed considering the disturbances. In the model, frequency of the grid is considered as a constant and/or slowly-varying but unknown quantity. Based on the developed dynamical model, a state observer is proposed. Then using Lyapunov function-based approach, a frequency adaptation law is proposed. The chosen frequency adaptation law guarantees the global convergence of the estimation error dynamics and as a consequence, ensures the global asymptotic convergence of the estimated parameters in the fundamental frequency case. Gain tuning of the proposed state observer is very simple and can be done using Matlab commands. Some guidelines are also provided in this regard. Matlab/Simulink based numerical simulation results and dSPACE 1104 board-based experimental results are provided. Test results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed approach over another state-of-the art technique

    Filtration and Synthesis of Different types of Human Voice Signals: An application of digital signal processing

    An observation of the effect in audio signal by using digital filter plays an important role in the field of digital signal processing (DSP). Day by day the digital form of signal is becoming more preferable than the analog one which is increasing the need of DSP in the rapidly changing world. Yet, there are many attractive schemes for designing a digital filter; we adopt windowing technique for design a FIR low pass filter in the frequency domain for the short period. However, the main task of our work is to perform filtration of the different types of practical human voice signals by using digital filter and synthesis of those signals to reduce the memory size (kB) by remaining the same quality of the signal. We used MATLAB for the design of digital filter and synthesis of those audio signals. MATLAB provides different options for signal synthesis.     REMOVAL OF CHROMIUM FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING LOCALLY AVAILABLE INEXPENSIVE TARO AND WATER HYACINTH AS BIOSORBENT

    In this investigation, locally available and inexpensive Taro and Water Hyacinth were used as biosorbents to remove chromium from synthetic wastewater. The removal of this metal ion from water in the batch and column method have been studied and discussed. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherm studies were also carried out. The material exhibits good adsorption capacity and the data follow both Freundlich and Langmuir models. Scanning Electronic Microscopic image was also used to understand the surface characteristics of biosorbent before and after biosorption studies. Effects of various factors such as pH, adsorbent dose, adsorbate initial concentration, particle size etc. were analyzed. The initial concentrations of chromium were considered 5-30mgL-1 in batch method and only 4mgL-1 in column method. The maximum chromium adsorbed was 1.64 mgg-1 and 4.44 mgg-1 in Batch method and 1.15 mgg-1 and 0.75 mgg-1 in Column method. Batch and Column desorption and regeneration studies were conducted. Column desorption studies indicated that both of these biosorbents could be reused for removing heavy metals. Results of the laboratory experiments show that the performance of Taro and Water Hyacinth prove that they can effectively be used as low cost biosorbents for the removal of chromium from wastewater.     A single-coil multi-tapped PDM-based induction heating system for domestic applications

    The conventional heating system is inefficient as the major part of the heating coil lies out-side the vessel it is placed on. This research article proposes a new single-coil multi-tapped induction heating system. This novel induction heating system is facilitated by a half-bridge resonant converter controlled by zero-voltage switching (ZVS). The multi-tapping winding system ensures an effective heat transfer between the coil and the working vessel with the windings of the induction coil segmented to an equivalent size of the vessel. The pulse density modulation (PDM) scheme employed here as the control proves to be the most versatile one. The whole system is duly simulated for an 850 W IH setup in MATLAB Simulink and implemented as a hardware prototype using a half-bridge resonant converter. The control pulses are developed through the PDM in a PIC16F877A controller. The simulation and experimental results prove the credibility of the proposed induction heating (IH) scheme, and during heavy loading conditions, it outperforms the single-coil IH system by gaining an efficiency of 89.29

    A critical review on charging technologies of electric vehicles

    The enormous number of automobiles across the world has caused a significant increase in emissions of greenhouse gases, which pose a grave and mounting threat to modern life by escalating global warming and polluting air quality. These adverse effects of climate change have motivated the automotive sector to reform and have pushed the drive towards the transformation to fully electric. Charging time has been identified as one of the key barriers in large-scale applications of Electric Vehicles (EVs). In addition, various challenges are associated with the formulation of a safe charging scheme, which is concerned with appropriate charging converter architecture, with the aim of ensuring a safe charging protocol within a range of 5–10 min. This paper provides a systematic review of thharging technologies and their impacts on battery systems, including charger converter design and associated limitations. Furthermore, the knowledge gap and research directions are provided with regard to the challenges associated with the charger converter architecture design at the systems level

    A Critical Review on Battery Aging and State Estimation Technologies of Lithium-Ion Batteries: Prospects and Issues

    Electric vehicles (EVs) have had a meteoric rise in acceptance in recent decades due to mounting worries about greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, and the depletion of fossil resource supplies because of their superior efficiency and performance. EVs have now gained widespread acceptance in the automobile industry as the most viable alternative for decreasing CO2 production. The battery is an integral ingredient of electric vehicles, and the battery management system (BMS) acts as a bridge between them. The goal of this work is to give a brief review of certain key BMS technologies, including state estimation, aging characterization methodologies, and the aging process. The consequences of battery aging limit its capacity and arise whether the battery is used or not, which is a significant downside in real-world operation. That is why this paper presents a wide range of recent research on Li-ion battery aging processes, including estimations from multiple areas. Afterward, various battery state indicators are thoroughly explained. This work will assist in defining new relevant domains and constructing commercial models and play a critical role in future research in this expanding area by providing a clear picture of the present status of estimating techniques of the major state indicators of Li-ion batteries

    A Numerical Thermal Analysis of a Battery Pack in an Electric Motorbike Application

    Today, electric driven motorbikes (e-motorbikes) are facing multiple safety, functionality and operating challenges, particularly in hot climatic conditions. One of them is the increasing demand for efficient battery cooling to avoid the potential thermal stability concerns due to extreme temperatures and the conventional plastic enclosure of the battery pack. A reliable and efficient thermal design can be formulated by accommodating the battery within an appropriate battery housing supported by a cooling configuration. The proposed design includes a battery pack housing made of high conductive materials, such as copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al), with an adequate liquid cooling system. This study first proposes a potted cooling structure for the e-motorbike battery and numerical studies are carried out for a 72 V, 42 Ah battery pack for different ambient temperatures, casing materials, discharge rates, coolant types, and coolant temperatures. Results reveal that up to 53 °C is achievable with only the Cu battery housing material. Further temperature reduction is possible with the help of a liquid cooling system, and in this case, with the use of coolant temperature of 20◦ C, the battery temperature can be maintained within 28 °C. The analysis also suggests that the proposed cooling system can keep a safe battery temperature up to a 5C rate. The design was also validated for different accelerated driving scenarios. The proposed conceptual design could be exploited in future e-motorbike battery cooling for optimum thermal stability
